Chapter Eleven

Sibelius

Watching Griffith help care for the babies, feeding them and consoling them, it had been too much for Sibelius to sit through. In New York, their day-to-day lives hadn't involved many interactions with children. In fact, Sibelius couldn't recall ever seeing his assistant in the presence of a child.

It was a sight that made Sibelius wish he could go back in time and do everything over again.

He wasn't the type of man to normally doubt his decisions, and he didn't enjoy starting now. But he'd always been so sure of his course to keep Griffith in his life while hiding much of who and what he was from him. And look what that had gotten Griffith. A mate who barely respected him. A mate by title and biology alone. But, without the emotional connections, how long before their bond faded?

Sibelius kept that worry nestled in his heart as he went back into the bunker, locking the door from the inside. Everyone who was supposed to have come down was here, and until the shifters began funneling back in, they were on their own.

Together, the hybrids, wolves, and bears had brought enough food, gas, and supplies to last them several weeks. The shifters were supposed to be bringing more as they arrived, which meant Sibelius had nothing to do now but wait.

Wait and stalk.

He stepped off the final stair and did a large circle around the room, pausing quickly in front of each door to listen for signs of distress. He wasn't trying to eavesdrop—not that eavesdropping was an act that was beneath him—and moved on quickly after hearing a murmured word or relaxed exhale. He circled around, approaching the room that Griffith had claimed. It was close to the entrance, whereas the others had chosen rooms further from the stairs.

He was just going to wait long enough to make sure Griffith was okay. At least, that's what Bel told himself as he stopped, his ear practically pressed against the wooden paneling that Griffith was using as a door. He heard a whimper and froze, fingers curling as he prepared to protect his mate. But, when the second whimper reached his ears, it sounded less pained and more carnal.

Sibelius's mouth and throat went dry. He shut off all other sensory information, ignoring any sight, sound, or smell that wasn't coming from the small makeshift room.

"Yes, that's right, bend me over," Griffith mumbled. Though Bel was listening through the door, he could still hear how stilted the words sounded, like he was repeating a line from a movie. Griff groaned in frustration, and then Sibelius heard the unmistakable sound of a man touching himself.

His mate was masturbating. At first, Bel felt only a possessive urge to burst in and show his mate that he was right there, ready to satisfy him. But, if Griff had wanted him near, he knew where Bel was. He could've asked.

Unless he was embarrassed?

Beyond his possessive feelings, or any feeling of being left out, Sibelius felt relief.
